New chicken shop gets planning permission

Feb 21, 2025

Plans to open a new chicken shop in Brighton have been given the go-ahead.

Pepe's Piri Piri has been granted permission by Brighton and Hove City Council to install new signage on a currently unused premises at 56 Lewes Road.

The decision was issued on February 7.

The site is part of a three- and four-storey mixed-use development on the western side of Lewes Road, with the ground floor commercial unit set to become a chicken restaurant.

The approved advertisement consent includes three internally illuminated fascia signs, one non-illuminated projecting sign, the application of vinyl signage to the windows, and the powder coating of the shopfront window frames in red.

A council planning report highlighted that the proposed signage had to be adjusted following initial submissions.

The original proposal for the fascia boards was deemed "inappropriate" due to size and visual impact.

"The proposed projecting sign would also be appropriately scaled and designed, and would not be illuminated."

The report also noted that the shopfront's window frames would be painted in a darker, more muted red than the proposed fascia signage, which was deemed favourable.

The council concluded that the proposed signage would not be "incongruous additions to the host building or the local area."

No objections were raised against the proposal.

Pepe's Piri Piri currently has 218 stores nationwide, serving grilled piri piri chicken.

Their website states: "We love chicken."
